Decorative Large Wall Clocks
70Weddings, anniversaries, retirements, housewarmings and other gift giving occasions often present a challenge in terms of finding a gift that is not just a trinket that will collect dust or be hidden away, but something the receiver will find useful and appreciate for years to come.
First a warning: I was once the recipient of a rather extravagant present – a large wall clock that obviously cost the giver a small fortune. But while smiling pleasantly and saying thank you I was actually cringing inside. Where would I hang such a massive, gaudy, gold embossed wall clock? How could I somehow manage to accidently break it and be very distraught so that whenever the giver visited my home I would have a sad tale as to why it was not displayed?
This I believe is not the reaction most givers want to cause the receiver. So here are a few tips:
- Do not buy a large piece of furniture, a large painting, or a large wall clock for someone you do not know extremely well.
- If you know the person to whom you are giving very well and are certain a clock is a good option, consider what kind of clocks they currently own. People tend to buy what they like even if it may not be the most expensive version. Consider buying a better quality clock to the one they already own.
- Consider the receiver’s ethnic or cultural background. No matter how tasteful a clock may be, if the receiver is Chinese it will be an insult. Clocks in Chinese cultural are NEVER given as gifts. It is thought that by receiving a present that marks time it will shorten the receiver’s life expectancy.
- Take into account the receiver’s current living circumstances. Do they have a home where they can hang a clock without having to haul it from place to place until they get settled? This may be a consideration for a newly married couple who are saving for their first house, or a couple who is retiring, selling the large house and moving to a smaller condo.
- Does the receiver have young children who are learning to tell time? If so they may appreciate a clock that is either digital (although that doesn’t help very much) or has clearly marked numbers and hands that a child can distinguish readily.
If after taking all these things into consideration you are sure that a large decorative wall clock is the right gift, then you may want to put these brand names on your list: Bulova, Howard Miller, Timeworks Clocks, Hermle, Seth Thomas, Infinity Instruments and Uttermost.
